As I put the last flower in one of the niches of the grave, I heard a scream. Oh, no. I turned around. A girl with a basket was staring at my wings which had become free of the makeshift cape.
"Will you keep it down? I'm already leaving." I said quietly. The girl screamed again. I moaned, then punched her as hard as I could. She collapsed, falling just in time for me to see a few villagers march up the hill with pitchforks.
A boy was leading the group. As soon as he caught sight of the girl on the ground, he froze, shocked. The villagers behind him slowed. His face changed from shock to fury. He ran up the rest of the way, leaving a large space between him and the others. By then I had hidden myself behind a large tombstone. By then he was close enough for me to see his face. It looked like...
"Sergei?" I asked. He glared at me.
"How could you do this? This was my sister!" What had happened to him that made him hate me so?
" She was screaming. It would have given my position away and made it all the harder for you and your family. Besides, I only knocked her out." I said, trying to calm him down.
He sighed."You could have told me you were staying here." He pointed out.
" I only wanted to see if you were safe. I have to leave, and when I leave, I won't be coming back." I said.
"Can you at least tell me where you're going?" Sergei asked pleadingly. "No." I said, a bitter edge in my voice. He heard it.
"Of course not." He sighed. "Best of luck Meera."
He stepped back, allowing me sufficient space to fly off.
I was partly releived, partly hurt. Sergei wasn't going to stop me, but did he want to stop me? I didn't want to think about that...
